How to Give Myself Ozempic Injection: A Step-by-Step Guide

Ozempic is a medication that is commonly prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is an injectable medication that helps to control blood sugar levels by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver. If you have been prescribed Ozempic and are responsible for administering the injections yourself, it is important to understand the proper technique to ensure the medication is delivered safely and effectively. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to give yourself an Ozempic injection.

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary supplies ready. This includes the Ozempic prefilled pen, alcohol swabs, a sharps disposal container, and a clean, flat surface to work on.

2. Wash Your Hands

Proper hand hygiene is crucial to prevent infection. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

3. Prepare the Injection Site

Choose a suitable injection site, which can be the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Clean the area with an alcohol swab in a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outward. Allow the skin to dry completely before injecting.

4. Prepare the Pen

Remove the needle cap from the prefilled pen. If the pen has not been used before, remove the needle cover and remove the blue cap from the pen. If the pen has been used before, remove the blue cap and the needle cover.

5. Prime the Pen

To prime the pen, turn the pen to the left until you hear a click. This will prime the needle and ensure that the medication is flowing smoothly. Turn the pen to the right to reset it.

6. Set the Dose

Turn the pen to the right until the dose you need is displayed on the dose indicator window. Make sure the dose is correct before proceeding.

7. Administer the Injection

Pinch the skin at the injection site with one hand, and with the other hand, hold the pen at a 90-degree angle to the skin. Insert the needle quickly and smoothly into the pinched skin. Depress the plunger all the way down to inject the medication.

8. Remove the Needle

After injecting the medication, wait for a few seconds before removing the needle. This allows the medication to be fully absorbed. Gently pull the needle out at the same angle it was inserted.

9. Dispose of the Needle

Place the used needle in a sharps disposal container. Do not recap the needle or throw it in the household trash.

10. Clean the Injection Site

Wipe the injection site with a clean, dry tissue or gauze pad.

By following these steps, you can ensure that you are giving yourself an Ozempic injection correctly. Always consult your healthcare provider for specific instructions and guidance tailored to your individual needs.
