How to Make Breakfast Bagels
Starting your day with a warm, freshly baked bagel can be a delightful way to kick off your morning. Bagels are not only delicious but also versatile, allowing you to customize them with various toppings and spreads. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making breakfast bagels from scratch, ensuring that you have a delicious and satisfying start to your day.
Ingredients
Before you begin, gather the following ingredients:
– 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
– 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
– 4 cups all-purpose flour
– 2 tablespoons sugar
– 2 teaspoons salt
– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
– Vegetable oil, for greasing the bowl and bagels
– Poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or any other toppings of your choice
Instructions
1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until frothy.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and melted butter.
3. Stir the mixture until a dough begins to form. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.
6. On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a 6-inch circle. Use a knife to make a deep indentation in the center of each circle, forming a bagel shape.
7. Heat a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Gently lower the bagels into the water, one at a time, and boil for about 1 minute on each side.
8. Remove the bagels from the water and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the bagels with a little vegetable oil and sprinkle with your chosen toppings.
9. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the bagels for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
10. Remove the bagels from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Serve warm with your favorite toppings, such as cream cheese, jam, or smoked salmon.
Enjoy your homemade breakfast bagels and start your day off right!
