Declining Verbal Proficiency- Unraveling the Reasons Behind My Worsening Speaking Skills

by liuqiyue

Why am I getting worse at speaking? This question has been haunting me for quite some time now. As someone who used to be confident in my ability to communicate effectively, I find myself struggling to articulate my thoughts and ideas as smoothly as I once did. The decline in my speaking skills has not only affected my personal interactions but also my professional life. In this article, I will explore the possible reasons behind this decline and discuss strategies to improve my speaking abilities once again.

One of the primary reasons for my worsening speaking skills could be the lack of practice. As the saying goes, “use it or lose it.” Over time, I have become less consistent in practicing my speaking skills, which has led to a decrease in my proficiency. I used to engage in regular conversations, attend public speaking events, and participate in debate clubs, but now, I find myself avoiding these opportunities due to fear or self-doubt.

Another factor that might be contributing to my decline in speaking skills is the lack of feedback. When I was improving my speaking abilities, I received constructive criticism and encouragement from friends, family, and mentors. However, as I have become more self-conscious, I have stopped seeking out this valuable feedback. Without guidance, it is challenging to identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments.

Moreover, the rise of technology has also played a role in my decline. With the advent of social media and messaging platforms, face-to-face communication has become less frequent. This shift has led to a decrease in my practice of spoken language, as I have become more accustomed to typing out my thoughts rather than speaking them. The lack of practice in real-time conversation has undoubtedly impacted my speaking skills.

Furthermore, my anxiety and self-consciousness have been significant obstacles. As I have become more aware of my flaws, I have started to focus on them, which only exacerbates my anxiety. This negative mindset has made it difficult for me to engage in conversations and express myself confidently. To overcome this, I need to work on building my self-esteem and developing a positive attitude towards my speaking abilities.

Finally, to improve my speaking skills, I have decided to take proactive steps. I will start by incorporating more speaking opportunities into my daily routine, such as joining a public speaking club or attending workshops. Additionally, I will seek out constructive feedback from trusted individuals and work on addressing the areas where I am weakest. By combining practice, feedback, and a positive mindset, I am confident that I can reverse the decline in my speaking abilities and regain my confidence.
