How to Make Side Pockets in a Dress: A Step-by-Step Guide
Adding side pockets to a dress can elevate its style and functionality. Whether you’re creating a custom garment or altering an existing one, incorporating side pockets can be a simple and rewarding task. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of how to make side pockets in a dress, ensuring a seamless addition to your favorite outfits.
Materials Needed:
Before you begin, gather the following materials:
– Dress fabric and lining (if applicable)
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
– Pinking shears (optional)
– Pins
– Sewing machine
– Thread that matches your fabric
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Pocket Pieces
Start by measuring the desired width and depth of your side pockets. For a standard size, a width of 4 to 6 inches and a depth of 5 to 6 inches works well. Measure the side seam of your dress and cut two rectangles of fabric to match the width and depth you’ve chosen. Make sure to add seam allowances if necessary.
Step 2: Create the Pocket Facings
To finish the edges of your pocket pieces, cut two strips of fabric that are 2 inches wide and as long as the height of your pocket. These strips will be used as facings to prevent fraying. Fold the strips in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press with an iron. Open the strips and fold the long edges to the center crease, pressing again. Then, fold the strips in half again, wrong sides together, and press. These are your pocket facings.
Step 3: Attach the Facings to the Pocket Pieces
Place the pocket pieces right sides together with the facings, aligning the raw edges. Sew around the sides and bottom of the pocket pieces, leaving the top edge open. Trim the corners and turn the pocket right side out using a point turner. Press the pocket flat, making sure the facings are tucked inside.
Step 4: Attach the Pockets to the Dress
Position the pockets on the dress side seams, ensuring they are centered and even. Pin the pockets in place, and then topstitch around the top edge of the pockets, securing them to the dress. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of the stitching to prevent unraveling.
Step 5: Finish the Seam Allowances
If you used pinking shears to cut your fabric, you can skip this step. Otherwise, carefully trim the seam allowances of the pockets and the dress to 1/4 inch. Press the seams open and then topstitch around the side seams of the dress to create a clean finish.
Step 6: Sew the Side Seam
Now that the pockets are attached, sew the side seams of the dress together, starting from the bottom of the dress to the top. Be sure to catch the pockets as you sew. Press the seams open and topstitch if desired.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully added side pockets to your dress. Enjoy your new, stylish garment, and remember that these steps can be adapted to various dress styles and pocket sizes. Happy sewing!
