How to Put a Pocket in a Bag Lining

Adding a pocket to a bag lining can be a great way to organize your belongings and make the most of your space. Whether you’re creating a custom handbag or simply modifying an existing one, inserting a pocket is a straightforward process that can enhance the functionality and style of your bag. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to put a pocket in a bag lining, ensuring a professional and seamless result.

Materials Needed:

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

– Bag lining fabric
– Pocket fabric (a contrasting color or pattern is recommended)
– Sewing machine or needle and thread
– Scissors
– Ruler or measuring tape
– Pins
– Iron and ironing board
– Optional: interfacing for the pocket and bag lining

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Pocket Fabric

Start by measuring the dimensions of the pocket you want to create. Typically, a pocket should be about 6 to 8 inches wide and 4 to 5 inches deep. Cut the pocket fabric to these dimensions, adding a 1/2-inch seam allowance around the edges.

Step 2: Iron the Pocket Fabric

Place the pocket fabric face down on the ironing board. Iron the fabric to remove any wrinkles and prepare it for sewing. If you’re using interfacing, iron it onto the back of the pocket fabric for added stability.

Step 3: Sew the Pocket Edges

Using a 1/4-inch seam allowance, sew around the three sides of the pocket (excluding the top edge). Leave the top edge open to insert the lining.

Step 4: Measure and Cut the Bag Lining Fabric

Measure the inside dimensions of the bag lining where you want to place the pocket. Cut the lining fabric to these dimensions, adding a 1/2-inch seam allowance around the edges.

Step 5: Iron the Bag Lining Fabric

Iron the bag lining fabric in the same manner as the pocket fabric, ensuring a smooth surface for sewing.

Step 6: Attach the Pocket to the Bag Lining

Position the pocket on the bag lining where you want it to be placed. Make sure it’s centered and aligned properly. Pin the pocket in place, then sew along the top edge of the pocket, attaching it to the bag lining. Use a 1/4-inch seam allowance and backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to secure it.

Step 7: Sew the Bag Lining Together

Now that the pocket is attached, sew the bag lining together, leaving an opening on one side for turning. Sew around the edges, leaving a 1-inch opening for turning. Trim the corners to reduce bulk.

Step 8: Turn and Press the Bag Lining

Turn the bag lining right side out through the opening. Press the edges with an iron to ensure a crisp finish. Topstitch along the edges to close the opening and create a professional look.

Step 9: Insert the Lining into the Bag

Place the bag lining inside the bag, aligning the edges. Sew the lining in place, securing it to the bag’s exterior.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully added a pocket to your bag lining. This addition will make your bag more functional and organized, allowing you to carry your essentials with ease. Enjoy your new, improved bag!
